Racquet Club The U.S. Tennis Association recently reported that tennis participation is at an all-time high across the country following five consecutive years of growth. That's music to the ears of our newly reconstituted Racquet Club tennis committee, Margo Barnard, Bill McGrath, David Singer, and Greg Smith, who have gotten organized to offer more ways for our residents to get back into the game. Resident Greg Smith, a USTPA elite professional who splits the year between Oceanside and the desert, has calendared skills clinics and drill sessions for club members over the next few months along with several free classes for OHCC residents looking to refresh their tennis skills. These small-group sessions require advance sign up and may fill up quickly. Check f lyers posted at the courts and emails from our Help Desk. Not a member? Email us so we can include you in our "free clinics" mailings. Our tennis group is also adding casual post-play socials to the summer calendar aiming to draw more residents down for friendly competition followed by conversation and camaraderie. If you are or were a tennis player – welcome! Be in touch! Help us expand our profile at OHCC! For pickleballers, the annual Men's Tournament is Sat., June 7. Play kicks off at 9 am on Courts 1 – 7 (adjacent to the Clubhouse) with the finals competition expected to start about 1 pm. Court bulletin boards have the latest schedule. Spectators are welcome and should expect a good show. Several teams enrolled in David Levine's May Team Camp class to hone their partnership play in preparation for the yearly contest. Tournament directors Paige James and Tracy Wilson have an enthusiastic volunteer corps assembled to run all aspects of the tournament and wrap-up party that follows. After non-stop pickleball classes during the first half of the year, lessons will slow down, but not pause, for the summer. Felicity Swerdlow and Ann Rike put together some "summer lite" classes (shorter sessions) and skills drills to keep the momentum going and calendared some "just for fun" round robins. Watch for club emails and check court bulletin boards and the website. Free beginner classes run every month given sufficient demand. Summer Chill 3 is coming up on July 27 – make sure this crowd-pleasing Lanai concert is on your calendar. Details in a few weeks. Meanwhile, enjoy yourselves this summer. Suggestion: pack a paddle when you travel – you'll find courts and players most places you go! Website: ohccracquetclub.org; Help Desk: email ohrchelp@gmail.com. Tracy Wilson and Paige James get Celia and Sue on board as tournament volunteers If you are looking for a way to reduce stress and anxiety, and a way to increase flexibility and balance, then Tai Chi exercise may be just what the doctor ordered. Originally, Tai Chi was developed for self-defense, but has evolved into a graceful form of exercise. Some describe it as meditation in motion because it promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Tai Chi is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion. Tai Chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. It is especially suitable for older adults who otherwise may not exercise. The benefits of Tai Chi may include: decreased stress, improved mood, increased energy, improved flexibility, balance, and agility, and improved muscle strength. OHCC offers a free Tai Chi class each Tuesday and Thursday, 9 to 10 am, in the Abravenal Hall. Each class is led by a video presentation that lasts about 45 minutes.
