SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | JULY 2025 9 By Suzette Strauss, Resident What a hoot! Our table raised our pinkies and our voices as we shared stories and laughed our way through our recent SDV Lifestyles event titled, "Ladies High Tea." I simply loved seeing all the ladies dressed up and many with adorable hats perched upon their heads. I thought it would be fun to review some of the etiquette of this tradition which began with the British and has been adapting to American tastes and social contexts. Dress: While not overly formal, presentable attire is generally expected. Hats seem to be optional and gloves, though elegant, are also optional. Table Manners: Place your napkin on your lap, keep your phone out of sight, and avoid clinking your spoon against the cup. Stirring your tea is done in a gentle back-and-forth motion rather than a circular motion. Social Customs: Participate in conversation, take small bites of food, and avoid slurping your tea. Teacups should be placed in their saucers when not in use. Scones, spreads, and small sandwiches are the expected foods and fingers are appropriate for eating. Never eat dessert first. Leovers are le behind, unless it is offered that you may take some home. Finally, the time of High Tea can vary, however, the idea is that as a snack and social between lunch and dinner. I know I'll be better prepared for the next time. Pinkies up ladies! A special "ank you!" goes to Ann Lontz, for allowing me to share her beautiful hand-quilted masterpiece that is so apropos.
