August is known for strength and protection. "August is the slow, gentle month that stretches out the longest across the span of a year. It yawns and lingers with the light in its palms" -Victoria Erickson With a snap of a finger, August is here. It seems like only yesterday that we were spring cleaning, organizing trips to see family, planting summer f lowers and losing a few extra pounds stored across the winter months. I turn on the TV. Suddenly a strange but enticing movie title appears, along with a short description: "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a remarkable tale of the island of Guernsey during the German Occupation and of a society as extraordinary as its name." "Treat Yourself to this book, please. I can't recommend it enough." ~ Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love. It was then that I realized that this was not only a wonderful movie but a book as well, one that earned its way to number one on The New York Times Best Books list. People Magazine states: "It is a small masterpiece about love, war, and the immeasurable sustenance found in good books and good friends." It is set in January of 1946 when London is emerging from "the shadow of the Second World War." Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject when she finds a letter from a man who found her name written inside a book that he was reading. They begin to exchange letters. She is fascinated by the world of this stranger and his friends that belong to a unique book society. As time progresses, Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society's members. She learns about their island, their taste in books and the impact that the German occupation had on their lives. What she discovers will change her life forever. Another great read, if you like thrillers, is Boomerang by Wall Street Journal author, Robert Bailey. He takes the reader on a journey of one man's fight for his family against a government with a shattering secret. The president of the United States has terminal cancer. Eli James, his faithful best friend, is the only one that knows. The book has many turns and twists to discover the truth, not the least is a devastating cover up worth billions of dollars and millions of lives. If you like mystery and excitement, this is your book! If you missed the last Afternoon with the Authors, it was a great success. Over 100 people came to listen to Bill Toone's presentation. Remember that if you belong to the Library Club there is no charge for these great events. Guests and non-members may attend for only $5, and new members may sign up at any time at the OHCC front desk. "August is the month to wish on shooting stars."
