38 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2025 | Newbies is the official welcoming group for Ocean Hills Country Club residents. We host quarterly potlucks where new and established residents can meet and socialize. We enjoyed a turnout of 86 people including 40 Newbies at the June 14th potluck on the Lanai. We are grateful to Barbara DuDeck, OHCC Resident Realtor, who sponsored the cake and ice cream. We would also like to acknowledge, with much gratitude, the time and effort donated by our Newbies Volunteers. A prize was awarded to the newest residents, Bob and Mary Hessinger, who moved into their home on June 8. New residents Ken Shafarman and his daughter Lauren, and Stan Satty and Carol Burton, each won a prize because they both moved from far away Connecticut! We enjoyed getting to know one other and the potluck spread was amazing. This month we are spotlighting new resident Karen Reinecke (photo inset). Karen moved to Ocean Hills in April from Peoria, Arizona where she lived for the past 18 years. Having lived her whole life in California, Arizona was quite the change. Her husband, who passed away nine years ago, loved the desert and Karen came to love it too. She made many friends there, but eventually California called her home. Prior to her retirement, Karen worked for the California Pistachio Commission, a state-authorized agency that represents all pistachio growers in the state. Based in Fresno, she spent 23 years marketing pistachios around the world and served as the Commission's president for the last 17. She rarely finds anyone who doesn't love pistachios. In fact, she has found that most people are addicted to pistachios! Although never having children of her own, her husband had a son who married a girl from Italy. They live outside of Florence and have two children, Davide and Francesca, so Karen is also fondly known as "Nonna Karen." They plan to visit her in Ocean Hills very soon. Karen decided to move to the San Diego area to be near her sister, and the day they found Ocean Hills, she knew she had found her new home. She moved into a beautiful home on Icaria Way and plans to just say "yes" to all the new possibilities. She is very much looking forward to this new season in her life and being a part of the Ocean Hills community. Welcome, Karen! The next Newbies gathering will be held on Sat., Sept. 13, from noon to 3 pm on the Lanai. Details will be publicized well in advance.
