40 | OHCC LIVING | AUGUST 2025 | "Knot Just Sailing – Building Friendships at Sea" Sailing with OHSC includes those with all walks of nautical life — seasoned sailors, enthusiastic cruisers, and even those who prefer to admire the waves from solid ground. What binds this wonderfully varied crew isn't just a fascination with the sea — it's the joy of each other's company. There's a special spark that happens when someone experiences their very first day on the water. Whether they're gripping the rail with wide eyes or already dreaming of their next sail, it's always a treat to be part of that moment. We go out of our way to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable, and we never get tired of watching the Harbor work its magic. Perhaps the secret ingredient is this: Ocean Hills residents are endlessly fascinating. Their past lives — as scientists, teachers, artists, engineers, entrepreneurs (and more) — could fill a dozen lifetimes. The stories shared during car rides, aboard the boats, and over dinner are often as rich as the ocean views. It's not just about the sailing. It's the laughter shared over the sound of gulls, the quiet conversations while trimming a sail, the quick friendships formed between people who might never have met otherwise. Whether you're interested in learning the ropes or simply soaking in the sun and sea breeze, there's a spot for you. Our experienced captains are always happy to teach — or to let you lean back and just enjoy the ride. You can find more details, sailing schedules, and photos of recent adventures on the Ocean Hills Sailing Club website. If you haven't sailed with us yet, come along. There's something about being out on the water that brings people together—and you just might find that the best part of sailing is who you share it with. Sailing News The Ocean Hills Sailing Club is thriving in 2025, with 283 members and 54 sails already completed. We're also charting new waters by adding boat rentals from Seaforth Marina, alongside our long-standing partner, Harbor Island Yacht Club. Check out the Sailing Club website for more information and upcoming sails. Our sailing education program continues to f lourish, thanks to the many generous members who share their time and expertise — from learning how to "read the water" to special training for Mates — we're lifting the skills of everyone from brand-new sailors to seasoned captains. Looking ahead, planning for the Hal Bolton Regatta 2025 Sept. 11 is well underway. Six race teams were anonymously and cleverly drawn at our recent Captains & Mates meeting. A post-race dinner and celebration ($25) will follow at Palm Court — mark your calendar! A Warm Send-O to Skip Maniscalco With this issue, Skip Maniscalco passes the writing baton to me, Pat Melzer, and I couldn't be more honored to continue sharing the stories of our OHCC Sailing Club. Skip has been our go-to writer, storyteller, and spirited voice for the past five years. His love for sailing — and gift of writing — has kept us informed, entertained, and always eager for the next update. His words brought our adventures to life and reminded us of what this club is really about: fun, friendship, and community. Thank you, Skip, for setting the bar high and the tone just right. We'll do our best to follow in your wake — with maybe just a few fewer puns (or not!). Written by Pat Melzer in collaboration with ChatGPT. Sailing Club The Table Tennis Club meets on Mon., Wed., Fri., Sat. and Sun. every week. On weekdays the default location for play is Mykonos Room. Our usual schedule is Mondays from 10:45 am to 12:45 pm, and on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 to 8 pm. Play on Sat. and Sun. are typically scheduled in Abravanel Hall all day from 8 am to 8 pm. Blocks of time are set aside for beginner and intermediate level instruction, and singles and doubles play for beginner, intermediate and advanced level players. Please check the updated weekly time schedules that are emailed to members every week and/or as posted on the marquee screen in the Clubhouse for the latest times because, occasionally, there are schedule changes based on room availability. Residents of Ocean Hills join the welcoming and fun Table Tennis (Ping Pong) Club for an annual fee of $12 per person. There is a membership form to fill out at the Clubhouse front desk.
