Racquet Club Summer may have arrived late, but everybody here seems to be doing the most we can to enjoy what we have in Ocean Hills especially when we look around the globe at the crazy weather conditions. Stop telling people about this place! Heads up to any of you who think you're pretty good at cornhole after a summer's worth of family and friend gatherings! Cornhole is the Racquet Club's "adopted" sport, and we get "serious" about it with a month-long Baggin'& Braggin' team competition on consecutive Wednesday evenings throughout September. Start assembling a team of four (club membership required) and watch for the email announcement to register around the middle of August. Paddle tennis has been a little quiet with "regulars" off globetrotting or just recovering from this 'n that, but their Monday morning 9 to 11 am drop-in at the HOA courts provides a perfect opportunity for the curious among you to drop by and check out this niche sport. Smaller court, less distance to run. No overhead serves, so less stress on the shoulder and elbow. One look at cartoonish bright, thick paddles and you realize this is game focuses on fun and good exercise. Swing by, take a courtside seat, and see if it might be for you. Free beginner lessons can be arranged. Men's 2025 pickleball champs Kirby Koetz and Bruce Lambert (Advanced) and John Crow and Hugh Lu (High Intermediate) earned bragging rights for their solid team play throughout the five-game June competition. Finishing second were David Levine and David Singer (Advanced) and Rob Madson and Scott Widdes (High Intermediate). In Low Intermediate action, Joel Batzofin and Jim Resney won top-honors in round-robin play. Paige James and Tracy Wilson oversaw a very well-run tournament, a thumbs-up "burgers and brews" lunch, and scores of volunteers – in fact they made it look easy! Pickleball lessons are mostly on summer hiatus, but beginner classes (free for all residents) are offered monthly if there's demand. Reach out to the Help Desk (see below) to be contacted. Pickleball machine training is scheduled for the first Thursday of the month, noon to 1 pm. Advanced sign-up required; the link is on our website. Tennis clinics and mixers are advertised on our website and on bulletin boards at the courts. Some are free for residents; others are exclusive to club members. The group is very welcoming, so if you've been thinking about picking up a racquet again, check it out. Originally, Tai Chi was developed for self-defense, but has evolved into a graceful form of exercise. Some describe it as meditation in motion because it promotes serenity through gentle, flowing movements. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. Tai Chi is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. Each posture flows into the next without pause, ensuring that your body is in constant motion. Tai Chi is low impact and puts minimal stress on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. It is especially suitable for older adults who otherwise may not exercise. The benefits of Tai Chi may include: decreased stress, improved mood, increased energy, improved flexibility, balance, and agility, and improved muscle strength. OHCC offers a free Tai Chi class each Tuesday and Thursday, 9 to 10 am, in the Abravenal Hall. Each class is led by a video presentation that lasts about 45 minutes.
