| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | AUGUST 2025 | 9 Family Feud premiered in 1976 with Richard Dawson as host. The popular TV game show surveyed 100 people to create the answer pool that contestants tried to guess. The phrase, "The survey says….", was repeated each time a player's response was checked against the collected answers. The show was a hit. Sometimes it seems you can't escape someone wanting you to rate how well they've done. "… if you'll just stay on the line for a brief survey". "Would you please rate the product you purchased on July 2nd?" All our technology is useless without the key ingredient, your input. Seeking some of that info, the Master Board launched a community-wide survey in May, requesting assistance rom the Delegate Assembly to execute the project. Carlie Beakes has chaired the committee from the Delegate Assembly tasked with developing and implementing the Board's mission. They've done a great job and if the stars have aligned, you'll get the survey this month. Everyone involved encourages you to take a few moments to respond. The Board would like a 70 percent response from residents in order to help guide their decision process. That's a lofty goal as only 49 percent of eligible votes were returned in the last election, but there's a plan in play to help us get there. All Districts will be in competition with one another to see which is first to reach the magic level of participation. The first place District will receive $100 for use in their activities. While the contest may help, the question that no survey can hope to answer is why people just aren't being as social as they once were. People are becoming less social due to a combination of factors, including social media, increased work demands, and a decline in community structures. While some individuals may naturally prefer solitude or experience social anxiety, broader societal shifts are contributing to a decrease in face-to-face interactions and a more isolated existence for many. None of this is good news for seniors. People are built for connection. Our most powerful emotional experiences and greatest memories are always tied to those we care most about. It's no secret the participation numbers at Sun Lakes are declining, and our Board struggles to find the real reasons. Perhaps when completed, this survey will have the answers that help us move in the right directions. Just before the answers are revealed, maybe someone will mutter beneath their breath, "… and the survey says…" ~ Cal Martin From the Delegate Assembly
