| SUN CITY CORE COURIER | AUGUST 2025 | 11 Woodshop Group Woodshop Member's Piece of Art Woodshop member Greg Vazques recently finished this beautiful piece of art. This leopard is made from a variety of different species of wood and measures 22"x24". This gorgeous cat consists of 192 individually cut pieces of wood. To make this cat come to life, each cut piece was sanded and shaped by hand, one piece at a time. This is a form of art called Wood Intarsia. Intarsia is an art form where various pieces of wood are carefully cut on a scroll saw and then fitted together to create a larger image or design. The result is a stunning, three-dimensional masterpiece. Greg started learning how to use a scroll saw just a little over a year ago, shortly after becoming a member of the Woodshop. After some practice and cutting some smaller wood projects, he decided to give Intarsia a try. He completed one small Intarsia project, which was a seashell, and he then decided to jump right into a large project, which is this leopard. Between cutting, shaping, and sanding all 192 pieces of wood, Greg spent well over 100 hours of sometimes very tedious work. I think you will agree that Greg's time was well spent in allowing him to make and finish this beautiful piece of art. Besides being a member of the Woodshop, Greg is also a Monitor and is at the shop every Thursday afternoon, from 11:30 am to 2 pm. Please stop by the Woodshop to meet Greg and talk with him, perhaps about learning about the scroll saw. Thank you, Greg, for sharing your Intarsia project with all of Sun City. Garden Club The Garden Club meets on the third Tuesday of every month, beginning at 10 am. Sign in, enjoy refreshments and our plant table (members bring cuttings and plants for sale), view the Treasure Table (donated items are raffled), and visit with other members. Each meeting also receives a raffle ticket for door prizes. Though we do not meet in July and August, we are busily planning our September to June year. We have many activities planned, including another local botanical garden, a beekeeper, Master Gardeners, a meeting on the benefits of earthworms, water-wise gardening, and much more. Come join the fun and learn all you can to create a garden oasis in our desert community. Our end of year party in June was a success! The theme was a Mexican Fiesta, and we celebrated with a delicious catered lunch. The entertainment was wonderful with darling folklorico dancers who did a fantastic job. We have room for more members so come check out our next meeting! If the heat bothers you, plant a tree; if water bothers you, plant a tree; if you like fruit, plant a tree; if you like birds, plant a tree; and if you like life, plant many trees or plant many flowers! We are all about teaching, learning, and working together to make our individual spaces at home as much a paradise as possible. With drought-tolerant landscaping (not just cactus!), a yard can be transformed using very little water. Come join our President, Jennifer Lopez; co-Vice Presidents, Jill Hardy and Valerie Gibson; and Treasurer, Camille Susca to learn about the fun things we can do to beautify our surroundings. ~ Jill Hardy Latest Woodshop Rae Winner: Congratulations to Cheryl Chambers who won the Woodshop's May rae.
