12 | SUN CITY CORE COURIER | AUGUST 2025 | We invite you to stop by the Lapidary workshop. We are located in front of the Shuffleboard building and next to Woodshop. As always, we are open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to noon. Our extended hours now include Monday and Wednesday, 5:30 to 7:30 pm. During the shop hours, there is a Monitor on hand to help train and guide you in your rock cutting, polishing, and jewelry making. Don't worry about not having any rocks to work with because the shop has plenty of rocks to get you started. July was the start of our monthly raffle. Tickets are $1 each; six tickets for $5; or 12 tickets for $10. Also, the prizes are on display. The prizes include jewelry donated by our most accomplished "lapidarians." The raffle is open to all SCCA residents. Drop by the Lapidary shop during our open shop hours to purchase tickets. The raffle winners are chosen at our monthly meeting (you do not have to be present to win). Currently, we are going through some meeting changes. The monthly meeting date and time will be announced when purchasing tickets. The following pictures are the three pieces won by three lucky raffle players. All three pieces were made in the Lapidary shop. Stop by the shop to view the next set of prizes for the current monthly raffle. President Art McCollum, Vice President Popo Cardenas, and Treasurer/Secretary Glen McCue. Lapidary Club The Sun City Quilting Club recently donated a total of 48 quilts to CalFire. Division Chief John Crater of Riverside County, who oversees eight firetrucks, came to speak to the group and share how they plan to use the quilts. He explained that Riverside County gets 600+ calls per day on average. Many of these incidents involve children, whether through a fire, accident, domestic abuse, or a parent being transported to a hospital. These quilts will be a tangible gift for them to know that someone cares and to give them comfort. The club also donated 75 drawstring bags at that time. Hemet Valley Quilters participated by donating 10 of the quilts. The club was very excited to participate and hopefully this will lead to a continued community partnership. Almost all the quilts were made with donated fabric, and we appreciate any donations of fabric and sewing notions. Contact Rose Rhoads for information on donations at 951-533-7520. ~ By Pat Williams Quilting Club
