e History of the Sun City Slammers Chair Volleyball Club The Sun City Slammers Chair Volleyball began in 2009 to lighten the mood and have some laughs for senior ladies of the Core. However, it was not long until those ladies were bashing that ball and competing as fiercely as high schoolers with raging hormones. As word spread, men started to join the club, and the fun and laughter escalated. With the popularity of the sport, there was a need for order, so guidelines were established along with a code of conduct. It was important to establish fairness to all members to ensure good sportsmanship and respect. After some discussion, it was decided that all body parts were subject to hits, but the player needed to be sure they did not hit the ball twice, consecutively. The chair they were sitting on was considered a body part and players had to keep their butt on the chair at all times or at least one cheek! Sally (a.k.a., "Smoking Slamming Sally") became well known for what she called "the ole boob shot!" Beach balls being slammed often hit a player unexpectedly on different body parts cause riotous laughter when the odd body part returned the ball over the net. Nicknames continued to emerge with the club being referred to as "The Laugh Factory!" As the club grew, they wanted to compete with other communities, so plans began for the first tournament with the goal to have it annually. JPN Insurance volunteered to sponsor the club, and, with Jonathan Nolan's assistance, the first tournament was a huge success. Many of the players got to re-live their competitive nature and were able to shine at Chair Volleyball while others felt exhilarated when they prevented these players from scoring by blocking their slams or sneaking a ball past them. These tournaments got quite competitive. The Sun City teams always succeeded with teams being victorious. How did we get to be so good? Stay tuned for Chapter 2 in the Courier next month! 14 | SUN CITY CORE COURIER | AUGUST 2025 | Chair Volleyball
