34 | LIFE IN SOLERA | AUGUST 2025 | Quiet Camping – You finally reached your favorite camping spot. Now it's time to relax and enjoy some peace and quiet. Some chores still need to be done that require the use of a generator. While there are many recreational vehicles equipped with solar panels and batteries, for the purposes of this article, we'll focus on quiet generators. There will be another article in the future focusing on recreational vehicles that use solar as their main power source. "Quiet" generators typically operate at or below 60 decibels from 20 feet away, about the sound of a normal conservation. A "quiet" generator reduces disturbing your fellow campers and violating any campground noise rules. To make a "quiet" generator even more quiet, place the generator on a rubber mat to absorb vibrations. Build a sound wall using plywood panels lined with insulating foam. Keep the muffler/exhaust away from the RV and nearby campsites. Always place the generator in a well-ventilated space and free from combustible materials. Be mindful of your camping neighbors. Respect the rules of the campground. Your camping neighbors want to enjoy their camping experience as much as you do. If overnight power is needed, used the power stored in the RV battery system. For medical devices, use an appropriate portable battery bank that meets the power needs of the medical device(s). Inverter type generators that have a quiet mode switch are arguably the preferred quiet generators. Inverter type generators are best for sensitive electronics such as cell phones and laptop computers. Honda has several portable inverter generators that fit the bill nicely. Check out the Honda EU3200i. This generator has a decibel rating of 54-58 decibels and has plenty of power to power almost everything in your RV. Champion makes several inverter generators, including a very powerful 5500-watt dual fuel generator(gasoline/propane) rated at 61 decibels. Other generators to consider are the Predator series of generators sold by Harbor Freight and Yamaha generators. Most of these generators can be bought online by major retailers. Look for generators with a good return policy and a good warranty. We all love the sounds of mother nature. Let's help her out a little bit and go quiet on our next camping trip.
