| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | SEPTEMBER 2025 | 5 Community Awareness Program By Michele Walter If you missed our program in August, you will definitely want to catch up by watching it on Channel 97. We had another incredible turn out. You can go to our website and find out more on the two presentations. Since I am also part of the steering committee for Blue Zones, I want to thank the following residents for their generous donations of school supplies to help school- age children in Banning: Chad and Linda Chatham, Anita Lawrence, Kasey Black, Linda Hoyt, Debbie Robbins, Gayle Bilek, Tom and Joan Whittington, Ruth Bray, Sal and Barbara Asaro, Irene Eichel, Eileen Zulkowski, Raelene Kretchman, and Thelma Thomas. Hopefully, I didn't miss anyone! What scams are trending right now? • Advance Fee Scams • Tech Support Scams • Phishing • Emergency Scams • IRS or Government Imposter Scams • Foreign Money Exchange Scams • Counterfeit Cashier's Checks • Bogus Debts • Home Repair Scams • Business Opportunities or Employment Scams • Shopping Sprees Scammers constantly develop new methods to deceive you. They have two main goals: first, to steal money, and second, to gather information. Scammers exploit your emotions and try to get you to make decisions without thinking. They don't want you to think clearly. They aim to create fear and panic so you ignore your instincts. They often use anger and yelling to induce fear as well. However, if you recognize the signs to watch for, you can avoid becoming a victim. Five Signs of a Scam: • They contacted you • They dangle bait-usually money • They want your personal information • You have to pay them first • You have to wire money or send gift cards To protect yourself from scams: Be cautious of unsolicited offers, verify contact information, do not click on links, visit the official website or contact them directly using their office phone number or email, and protect your personal information. Report suspicious activity to the California Attorney General's office at oag.ca.gov/ report and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at reportfraud.ftc.gov. Remember, staying informed and cautious is the best way to protect yourself from falling victim to scams. Questions or concerns? Call Michele Walter at (951) 202-8009 or email crystalwater@dc.rr.com. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. September is National Senior Center Month and I'd like to recognize the vital role senior centers play in improving the lives of older adults and strengthening our communities. This year's theme, "Powering Possibilities: Flip the Script," challenges stereotypes about aging while celebrating the contributions of older adults and the centers that serve them. Across the nation, senior centers serve as vibrant community hubs, connecting older adults to essential services. In the Fifth District, we are proud to feature five active senior centers: Moreno Valley, San Jacinto, Calimesa, Beaumont, and Banning. If you haven't already, please visit your local senior center and take advantage of the activities and resources they offer. It's a great way to connect with your community!
