From Courtney, the publisher: When my son Ben was 13, he was waiting for me to pick him up after school. I pulled up to the corner where Ben waited for me, he had a little dog is his lap. I knew a second dog would be a no-go for my husband so I yelled out the window, "NO!" Ben carried him to the car and said, "We can't just leave him here." Good point. Ben sat in the front seat with the dog on his lap. The dog was neglected — skinny with ribs sticking out, dirty, and clearly homeless. But he was SO happy to be in the car, sitting on a boy's lap, and looked ahead at the road with a big dog smile on his face, tail wagging as we drove home. Over the next couple of days we hung signs around where we had found him with no response. We took him back to that neighborhood with the intent of knocking on doors and asking if anyone knew where the dog belonged. But as we walked, I decided we could give this happy little guy a better life than what he had. And we did. We named him Doug and for the next 12 years, he was part of our family. He slept with his boy until the boy grew up and moved away. Then he slept on a bed next to our bed and every night I fell asleep listening to him quietly snoring. Every morning I'd wake up and he'd sit up and jump up with me. He went for long walks with my husband every day until he couldn't. Then he went on short walks with me. He loved being in the car and feeling the wind on his face. He was the happiest little guy and followed me around all day like my pilot fish. I sang a song to him when I got his meals ready and he'd get so excited he'd spin in a circle. He let me draw eyebrows on him. Then he got sick. Two days ago I made the heartbreaking decision to put him down. He wasn't happy anymore and I knew he was in pain. Now I have a huge hole in my heart. But I am so lucky to have known him for 12 years. Thank you, Doug. You crawled in to the right lap on that corner and we hope you had a great life with us. I found the joke!
