8 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | SEPTEMBER 2025 | ey go the extra mile We're all familiar with the idiom, "…go the extra mile," meaning to go above and beyond what is expected or required. It emphasizes the importance of exceeding expectations in our actions toward others, even faced with difficult or unfair circumstances. The phrase is rooted in the Sermon on the Mount from the book of Matthew. Under Roman law anyone could be compelled to carry a soldier's gear for a mile. The extra mile was to be freely given from a generous spirit, and a willingness to serve. Though centurions no longer walk our streets, those with generous spirits and a willingness to serve do. Many of them are your Delegates. As leaders in their Districts, Delegates spend countless hours on behalf of others. They don't do it for money or even recognition, simply to be of help to others. They care about the welfare of people in the community, want it to be the best it can be, and work toward that end. Good leaders are self less, put the interest of others first, and know their reward comes in a job well done. We should question the motives of anyone interested in boosting his ego. Good leaders are not entrenched in executing their ideas exclusively, instead they seek the input of those working on the same problems. They listen more often than speak, pursuing honesty even if it comes at a cost. Good leaders are rare. Delegates cannot handle all the demands of a District by themselves. They want and need the involvement of their neighbors. Volunteering isn't just about working. It's the platform on which acquaintances grow into friendship and relationships blossom. We are all designed for connection. It's the essence of what makes life worth living. All of the most important moments of our lives are diminished when we don't have someone with whom to share the experience. Volunteering is truly about sharing your life with others in a cause of mutual interest. Nothing is a better catalyst to put a spark in your retirement journey.
