September: e Harvest Month e Month of New Endings and New Beginnings "Autumn is a second Spring when every leaf is a ower." ~ Albert Camus Here we are in September. Where did summer go? The beaches are vacant now as summer visitors return to their homes, and children return to another year of school. It is the time to grab your favorite book, find a quiet place on the beach and lose yourselves within the magic of the written word, and celebrate "Read a Book Day" on Sept. 6. If you are looking for a historical fiction at its best e Stolen Life of Colette Marceau, by Kristin Hamel is a great choice. It has received five-star reviews by Novels Alive. Hamel, the author of more than a dozen novels, does not disappoint. She is published in more than 36 languages. I have personally read one of her best-selling novels, e Book of Lost Names, and it is unforgettable. Her current book, recently released in 2025, is an electrifying story of two jewel thieves, a priceless bracelet and a quest for answers to a decade old murder. It introduces us to Colette Marceau who stole from the Nazis to help fund the French Resistance. Her mother had instilled in her an old code of honor, "take only from the cruel and unkind, and give to those in need." She and her best friend faithfully followed this until 1942 when her mother was arrested by the Germans and Colette's four-year old sister disappeared. Seventy years have passed. Colette has redistributed $30 million in jewels over the decades to fund many worthy organizations. She discovers a long-time missing bracelet that shows up in a museum exhibition. She knows that this item holds the answers to her sister's disappearance long ago. The novel takes many exciting twists and turns as she must confront the ghosts of her past and bring a murderer to justice. If you have been enjoying "The Afternoon with Author's Series," you will be glad to know that the library is currently negotiating presentations for this fall and early 2026. We are excited to be scheduling Anita Simons, a regionally successful playwright who is an OHCC resident. Anita also offers a "Play Readers" class here at the Clubhouse, sponsored by the Theatre Arts Department. We are hopeful that Richard Lederer, Union-Tribune language columnist and founding co-host of "A Way with Words," and a broadcaster on KPBS will be joining us this fall. Finally, and back by popular demand, Bill Toone will return to tell us more about his travel adventures. Dates are pending, so watch for more information as we receive it.
