| OHCC LIVING | SEPTEMBER 2025 | 43 Are you an early morning lap swimmer who uses the reservation system? Just a reminder to please CANCEL your reservation if you discover that you're unable to attend that day. We are hearing reports that some swimmers neglect to cancel, leaving a slot open that someone else could have used. Be considerate. You won't want to miss our next meeting. We'll gather on Wed., Sept. 17 at 1:30 pm on the Lanai for a presentation by our own Phil Topar. Phil will share about his career, starting as a lifeguard, and eventually becoming Captain and then Battalion Chief for LA County, the largest professional lifeguard association in the world. He has stories to tell! A big claim to fame is that Phil was the inspiration and technical director for a TV show that was filmed on one of his beaches. Have you ever heard of Baywatch? Hope you can join us for this interesting talk. Our July Swim Clinic is officially in the books and a very successful event it was. Twelve OHCC residents gathered on 3 Saturdays to work on swimming skills. Some were starting from scratch and learning to put their faces in the water. Others wanted a touch-up on their strokes or to learn proper breathing technique. We saw lots of progress! Many thanks go to our volunteer instructors — Robin Ryan, Ken Krueger, Lynn Topar and Phil Topar. These four put in hours of time, patiently encouraging and teaching. Here are some comments from 2025 participants: • I loved it! Great job to all of you for your time, input and expertise. • I learned so much! My instructor explained and gave positive feedback with such clarity and patience. • I can't say enough about the swim club's clinic. My granddaughter recently told me that I swim "like a professional!" • I've never seen myself swim so I had no idea what I needed help with. My stroke is now better, and I have the clinic to thank for it. I'll be back for the next one. The annual Swim Clinic has been going on for many years. The club has always been committed to teaching our members proper swimming strokes and breathing techniques. Maybe next summer will be your time to try it out. Don't give up until you feel the magic too! Interested in joining the club? Just drop off a check for $12 at the Clubhouse front desk. Be sure to include your address, email and cell phone number on the check. Written by Sara Stewart, Club VP Swim & Wellness Club Senior Fitness Club Chair Yoga: Benefits for EVERYONE.
