FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | OCTOBER 2025 57 This is the perspective of the artist of the month, Darcel Smith. "When I was just a youngster, I bought my rst sketch book and drawing pencils. I would draw every free moment I had. Sketching was a good way to keep myself busy during Michigan's cold winter months. I continued to sketch for many years until the responsibilities of work, home, and a growing family meant I had less spare time. My sketchbook and pencils were pushed to the back of my closet to gather dust. ere they remained,with some of my early drawings that survive, until I packed up to move to So Cal in 2012. By then I had retired,the kids had their own families, and now I found that I had more time. In 2015, I decided to dust o my sketch pad and pencils, and I rekindled my passion for drawing. "In 2023, I moved to the Four Seasons Beaumont but only recently discovered the Mixed Media Art class. It is a great group. I work on what interests me. It's so helpful to get immediate feedback and suggestions for improvement from our instructor, Rob Kelman, and others artists in the class. I have grown in condence and ability since joining the class. My current enjoyment is drawing the scenery of the amazing West, my new home." Classes are held on Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 12 noon. We are so fortunate to have many talented people in our ceramics classes creating a variety of collectible pieces for gifts and personal art for their homes. We always welcome new students to share ideas, craft interesting ceramics, laugh, share stories, and listen to nostalgic music.
