When I was a kid, things were dierent than they are today. e
good old days, yeah, right. ings my mom said to me. What part
of no don't you understand? I don't care who started it. I don't
know is not an answer. Because I said so, that's why. e dreaded,
don't make me come over there. Don't even think about it.
ere were two ways to die: natural causes and talking back.
We had two choices at the dinner table: eat what was served or
go hungry.
e grease pot on the stove that was never cleaned. Year aer
year we just kept adding grease. e cans that had keys to open
them, spam, sardines, corned beef and coee.
Games we played. Red light, green light. Hide and seek. Tag.
Musical chairs. Red rover, red rover, and we would casually
clothesline all the kids we didn't like. All were adventurous. Kids
are so today. I died once when I was ve, and my mom made me
walk it o and suck it up, blow on it, stop crying, you'll be ne. We
all just ate dirt and moved on.
Our plans had three steps: 1.) Bad Idea. 2.) Do it anyway. 3.)
Run. We weren't just outside kids, we were sunburned, bug-bit,
waterlogged legends. No AC, no seat belt, no problem. Just wind,
bugs, and freedom in the back of a truck. Nobody complained
about the heat. We just sat on the porch and melted.
ought for the day: If you love someone, set them free. If they
come back, it means nobody else liked them. Set them free again.
