Racquet Club What a summer it was for OHCC tennis! eir sports committee jumpstarted its membership campaign with a highly successful Memorial Day event that drew three dozen players to the courts and then capped o that play day with a catered lunch to the accompaniment of live music. e 1st Annual Labor Day Tournament drew 16 players with the team of Joyce Baker, Kurt Duke, John Hurley, and Hugh Lu capturing the home-baked chocolate chip cookies grand prize! In between, Coach Greg Smith singlehandedly provided two to four free clinics a month, from popular ball machine drills to strategy sessions, including volley/overhead clinics and groundstrokes (among others). We continue to experiment with Club Nights where there's a Grand Slam Pizza meet-up aer playing tennis and weekend tennis mixers with their built-in social at the conclusion of play. e number of active tennis-playing residents is growing thanks to the enthusiasm, persistence, and hard work of our tennis committee (Greg & Cindy Smith, David Singer, Margo Barnard Veronique Naegel and Kirby Koetz). Tennis social events such as September's multicultural potluck on the Palm Court go a long way to get people interested in tennis together and motivate more of them to dust o their racquets. Bill McGrath is back in the village from Boise and will add his spin to the numbers-building campaign while the Smiths winter in the desert. Interested in playing tennis? Contact Greg Smith at smithgandc@aol.com.
