Your Makua Hula Hawaiian Dancers enjoyed performing for you
at the Follies last month. We performed Hula Rock Mama and Na
Hala o Naue. For Na Hala o Naue, we used our pu'ili sticks.
"The Hawaiian pu'ili sticks (at left) are traditional split-bamboo
percussion instruments with a pre-
European contact history used
in hula to accompany chants and
create rhythmic sounds. Made from
bamboo, one end of the stick is solid
for a handle, while the other is slit
into segments that produce a rustling
or rattling sound when struck against
another pu'ili or the dancer's hand. These instruments are central
to Hula Kahiko, the ancient style of dance, and can be used by
both seated and standing dancers to enhance the storytelling and
traditions of hula." (From Google)
We hope to see you at the District Tree Lighting Ceremony
in December. We will be performing Hallelujah and Run, Run
Rudolph. We will also be joining our Sun Lakes Chorale for their
December show performing e Prayer/Lead Us Lord.
Anyone interested in learning Hawaiian Hula dancing is welcome
to join the Makua Hula Dancers every Wednesday at the North
Clubhouse from 10 am to 12 pm. No previous dance experience is
necessary.
