FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | NOVEMBER 2025 57 This is the perspective of the artist of the month, Christine Vegara. "Although most of the time students in the Mixed Media Art Class work on subjects of their choosing, once in a while we join a class-wide "challenge" to do a piece based on a common subject. One such challenge this past summer was to select a photo from Edward S. Curtis's historic collection of later 19th century and early 20th century Portraits of Native Americans and interpret it as we wished. It was fascinating to see which portraits we were each drawn to and the very dierent media and styles of our resulting artwork. I selected this picture of Ola Noatak, a young Eskimo woman. e original photos were black and white and although some people chose to interpret their photograph in color, I felt that simple graphite pencil on white paper best captured the starkness of her image and, likely her life. I have been part of Rob Kelman's art class for more than a decade, and continue to nd new inspiration as well as a wonderful supportive group of people who are all exploring their creative expression. We would love to have you join us.." Classes are held on Mondays and Fridays from 10 am to 12 noon.
