32 | OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2025 | Newbies is the official welcoming group for Ocean Hills Country Club residents. We host quarterly potlucks where new and established residents can meet and socialize. We enjoyed a turnout of 68 people including 28 Newbies at the Sept. 13 potluck on the Lanai. We are grateful to Barbara DuDeck, OHCC Resident Realtor, who sponsored the cake and cookies. A prize was awarded to the newest resident, Jeannine Wall, who moved into her home on Sept. 9. Jeannine loves horses and sailing and has traveled the world. New residents John and Marie Blackwood won a prize for moving here from far-away Naples, FL. Ray and Pat Ferrari tied for farthest by moving here from Fairfax, VA. This month we are spotlighting new residents Steve and Cherie Wilson (at left), who recently moved to OHCC from a larger home just five minutes away. Cherie was born and raised in Puerto Rico and Steve is a native of Ohio. They met at Duke University while doing graduate work in Sociology. After Cherie earned her master's degree, she became the CEO of a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia and later headed up the Department of Youth Services in Boulder, CO. Steve became a professor at Temple University and then at the University of Colorado, where his research focused on "Altered States of Consciousness." He still teaches a course in Criminology online. Throughout the years, he has taught Yoga and Meditation and belongs to a Zen Meditation group that meets here at OHCC. The couple has engaged in various artistic pursuits during their time together. Cherie creates hundreds of jewelry pieces of all types and hopes to have some sales here in the future. She now spends most of her time cultivating the multitude of plants in their yard. Abstract paintings and sculptures created by Steve can be found throughout their house and garden. Since high school, he has played drums in jazz, funk, and soul bands, but is currently interested in creating electronic music. Their loft has been converted to a studio for the creation of music and music videos. Readers over 55 will likely enjoy the Wilsons' most popular video entitled "AARP; A Parody of Louie, Louie for Senior Citizens." You can find it by searching on YouTube for "AARP Parody, Cherie Wilson." The couple go dancing at least once a week at local venues and are pleased to find that the music clubs here offer even more opportunities for dancing. The next Newbies potluck will be held on Sat., Dec. 13, from 10:30 am to 1 pm in Abravanel Hall. Details will be publicized well in advance.
