18 | OHCC LIVING | NOVEMBER 2025 | It is a Thursday, so Penny and I are headed out on another shuttle trip for lunch at Boudin SF and shopping at Sprouts in the Las Posas shopping center. We are joined by a lovely couple who are regulars on the shuttle. Since they both are no longer able to drive, they depend on the shuttle to get to the grocery store and places like Costco or Walmart. We also had a new driver, Jeff, to get to know. He tells us how much he likes driving, which is good since he comes to us all the way from Imperial Beach. Amazingly, after just a short time at this job, he knows his way around our area very well. Jeff is taking over for Juan, who left the company, and he is just as helpful to his riders as Juan was. Both helping us get in and out of the shuttle and handling our shopping bags, along with playing music that we all liked, he made this an enjoyable trip. Since this was a girls' only trip for us, Penny and I had to bring back some delicious bread from Boudin's for our husbands. The problem there was choosing between all the delicious offerings. Of course that meant we have to go back again. Ladies, I suggest you grab a friend or two and join us for this wonderful experience. Just check the schedule at the Clubhouse and decide where you want to go. Then sign up the day before your intended trip. It couldn't be easier. Written by Lynn Williams Transportation Happy Thanksgiving to all! November has arrived all too soon, as we gather again for a holiday that is rich in memories for most of us. The Macy's Day Parade comes to mind for this writer. At five years old, in attendance with Grandma Clara and Auntie Eleanor, the big inflatable balloon turkey broke loose from the tethers and started to fly across the parade participants in Central Park. Not knowing a turkey could fly, the terror this created is still a lasting memory for this parade-loving adult. Thanksgiving is Thurs., Nov. 27, and the Clubhouse will close at 5 pm so staff can celebrate with family and friends. Each year residents ask if we are hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for those that may be staying close to home. We have a group of concerned residents willing to combine their efforts, to provide a meal for those that may be alone, without family and friends nearby. Club W is organizing the dinner from 1 to 3 pm and they will be accepting sign-ups for a minimal cost. We are hoping for enough interest to make for a memorable event for our members. We thank those involved for their generosity and willingness to serve others. Sign-up forms are available at the front desk. The Tri-City LunchWise Presentation is on Thurs., Nov. 6 at 11:30 am. Lunch is provided for those that have signed up to attend. Deadline for reserving lunch is Nov. 1. Two physicians will present nourishing conversations on "adding life to your years" and "personalized health care." Dr. Christopher Bo and Dr. Kern Brar will be our guests as Tri City Medical Center visits us for their last lecture of the year. A special thanks to the Tri-City Medical Center for their continued support. The Annual Unwrapped Toy Drive begins on Fri., Nov. 7 in the Clubhouse. The toy drive will commence on Sat., Nov. 22, for distribution to Camp Pendleton families. It may appear to be quite early to do the shopping, but the distribution to those qualified becomes the challenge, taking many volunteers to see their mission accomplished. One year a resident donated their entire Barbie Doll Collection in the original boxes. Imagine the child receiving a gift of this kind. Generosity is prevalent and the intricate work of so many craftspeople makes this an OHCC event not to be missed. Thanks to the Woodchucks, the Sewing Etc. Club, Painters, Choral Society Singers, and various contributors for all their dedication to this project. Veteran's Day is Tues., Nov. 11 at 11 am. Please come out to support the Village Vets, their distinguished guests, and the RBV Band with Director Eric Weirather. The program has taken over a year to organize and our thanks to Bob Bechill and his team for putting this memorable event together for the enjoyment of all. Refreshments immediately following on the Palm Court. Do arrive early as to secure a parking space. The Community Services Committee is hosting their last seminar of the year on Fri., Nov. 14, 10 – 11:30 am, in the Mykonos Room, "Staying Safe in the Age of AI." Paul Greenwood will be our presenter. Paul Greenwood is a retired San Diego Deputy District Attorney where he headed up the Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit for 22 years. He has prosecuted over 750 felony cases of physical, sexual, emotional, and financial elder abuse. Paul now spends much of his post-retirement time consulting on elder abuse cases and providing training to law enforcement and Adult Protective Services agencies across the country and internationally. He is also a criminal justice board member of National Adult Protective Services Association. Light refreshments will be served. New Year's Eve is just around the corner; can it be so? Tickets go on sale on Tues., Nov. 4; more info to follow. Last year we ended earlier, trying out a New York New Year's Eve countdown due to the request of some of our members. This year, we will party hardy California-time 'til 12:30 am, ringing in the New Year, Jan. 1, 2026. Get ready, get set, and here we go … bring on the holidays! I am thankful for my family. I am thankful for my friends. I am thankful for anksgiving. I hope it never ends! I am thankful for this turkey and the fun we share today. I am thankful to be thankful in the thank-fullest way!
