FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | DECEMBER 2025 43 Tails & Trails - All Pets The holidays are an exciting time for everyone, including our four-legged friends. However, it can also be dangerous if we're not aware of what's good and bad for our pets' health. Keep a close watch on your Christmas tree. It looks beautiful to you, and it's likely very appealing to your pet as well. Christmas trees are a central decoration in most homes during the festive season, but they can pose risks. Cats love to climb trees, so it's important for cat owners to fully pet-proof their tree — ensure it's well anchored and keep all decorations securely higher up and toward the center of the tree, making them less accessible. Most cats dislike the feel of aluminum foil on their claws, so try wrapping foil around the base of the tree to discourage climbing. Also, ensure the water in the tree base is covered so curious pets don't drink from it. Christmas decorations can also be hazards. Pets love to play with and chew on anything within reach. Swallowing decorations left on the f loor could cause choking and might require surgery to remove. Be cautious with seasonal plants, too. While they look lovely, many festive plants are harmful to pets, sometimes without you realizing it. Be mindful of poinsettias, pine needles from the Christmas tree, holly, mistletoe, and acorns. All of these can cause irritation, stomach issues, and pose a choking risk. Keep stress levels low. Hosting guests can be exciting for your pets, but it can also cause stress. So, if you're planning a social holiday gathering this year, it's crucial to help your pet stay calm and relaxed.
