The Veterans of Sun Lakes had a very exciting and interesting meeting in November. The Veterans of Sun Lakes participated in the Nov. 15 'rained out' Veterans Walk organized by the Recreation Department. Several Board members sold American f lags, and with other contributions, raised over $300 with all proceeds going to Liberty Village in Beaumont, which is a community for disabled veterans who have experienced homelessness or chronic homelessness. At the November meeting, we had several members presenting their military service, including Hernan Rojas - USA, who works at Sun Lakes with FirstService Residential. Our guest speaker was Adam French, Interim Director, U.S. Army (Ret) with the Riverside County Department of Veterans' Services. He presented the nearby Department's focus to improve the quality of life for veterans and their dependents by providing comprehensive support, resources, and advocacy to ensure they receive the benefits and opportunities they deserve. Contact information was provided. Our club is focused on providing information and resources to support the Veterans of Sun Lakes. What was very rewarding was that a teacher from Life Christian Academy in Chandler, Arizona, reached out to our club, in wanting her students to do something special for Veterans. She had her first to fourth grade students write special "Thank You for Your Service" hand drawn cards for Veterans Day. Over 50 were received and handed out at our November meeting. It was a very heartwarming and appreciative gesture. Thank you to Maggie Goodwin from Life Christian Academy. A return thank you gift from the Veterans group was provided. We enjoyed our Annual Holiday Party with special guests in December. ~ Douglas Emery, (951) 377-1145 Veterans Group
