| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JANUARY 2026 | 53 Pickleball is 60 years old. It's hard to believe since most of us have only known about it for a few of those years. Invented by and for seniors, the game has never seemed younger. The average age of players is dropping rapidly, even here at Sun Lakes as new residents are drawn to this popular sport. As we turn the page to 2026, it seems appropriate to share some of the collected wisdom surrounding our favorite pastime. • We came for the sport, we stayed for the people • If you're not laughing on the pickleball court, you're doing it wrong • Some of the best friendships started with "May I play?" • Pickleball proves that competition and connection can share the same court • In pickleball the only thing better than winning is laughing with friends • Imagine all the people you wouldn't have had the opportunity to meet if not for pickleball • The only place where strangers immediately become doubles partners • Pickleball is cheaper than therapy • Pickleball offers a chance to pay it forward. Help new folks learn as others helped you Seems as though there are some common themes going on here. This game is, first and foremost, about connections. Club members have formed lifelong bonds. Doubles partners become traveling companions. Competition takes a back seat to camaraderie. It is absolutely great fun to play well and win. It can be even more fun to laugh about the lame shots we kept repeating. There may be no better remedy for the blues than to get outside, link up with fun-loving people, and get some exercise. If that sounds inviting, give our club ambassador, Royce Newman, a call at (951) 809-2303. He will be delighted to introduce you to the Pickleball Pavilion. See you on the courts! Pickleball Club
