FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JANUARY 2026 59 The temperature might be dropping outside, but inside at The Summit the water is warm, and the volleyball competition is hot! We began our indoor season in November with play on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10 am to 12 noon. We held its annual holiday party in The Lodge Ballroom. This year's event had a Hawaiian theme with Polynesian food and drinks, as well as island games. Everyone who attended had a great time and a big thanks to DJ Dave Rohrbacker for acting as our Master of Ceremonies. Water volleyball is a great way to get out of the house for some low impact exercise, and the indoor game is much easier since the ball is softer and the pool is shallower. Everyone is welcome and beginners especially enjoy the indoor experience. You don't need to be a member of the club to participate, and all ages, heights, and skill levels can enjoy the fun. Some participants in the Spin and Slam Club have been playing table tennis for decades and many, while growing up, had tables in their garages or basements. As in other racket sports such as pickleball or paddle tennis, there are specific rules that govern the legal method of serving a table tennis ball. Below is a refresher course on the proper way to serve: "A legal recreational ping pong serve requires you to toss the ball up at least 6 inches from a flat, open palm (see illustration inset), strike it as it falls behind the end line of the table, ensuring it bounces on your side first, then the opponent's (cross-court in doubles), all while keeping the ball visible. Key points are the open palm toss at least six inches, vertical throw, behind the table contact, and ball visibility." Table Tennis has been proven to be an excellent sport for seniors, particularly its positive impact on hand/eye coordination, intense concentration, and quick reflexes. The Spin and Slam Club meets on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 10:30 am at The Courts. For those of you who haven't played in decades, there are plenty of spare paddles and balls at your disposal. See you at The Courts. ~ Bob Rubenstein, brube88@gmail.com Spin & Slam We've implemented our winter schedule, which means that we start play at 9 am instead of 8 am on Mondays and Saturdays. We continue to play at the shuff leboard courts at The Lodge, behind the swimming pool and next to the paddle tennis courts. We enjoy our own quiet area for playing. A great way to start your day is to come out and join our group for some fresh air, exercise, and socialization. Shuff leboard is an easy game to learn and almost anyone can quickly become proficient. Our games usually last about an hour or so and we randomly select different teams each time that we play. This keeps the competition challenging and the games more interesting. We have no losers, only non-winners. We have a wonderful group of residents who play regularly but we are always eager to welcome new players. If you are interested in joining a fun activity with friendly residents, please come out on a Monday and/or Saturday morning a little before 9 am. We will introduce you to the game of shuff leboard in case you have never played. If you have played before and just need a review, we can give you a refresher. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Otherwise, I hope to see you at the shuff leboard courts. ~ Marty Rotman, (310) 948-1693, mrtmj@aol.com Shuffleboard Bocce Ball Bocce Ball is played on Tuesday and Friday at 9 am at The Summit. We continue to have good turnouts as we head into the winter season. If you are interested in learning the game, come join us. No previous experience is needed.
