e Month of New Beginnings As I sit and ref lect about the meaning of the various months of the year, January often steps out from the rest. It is the month that offers us a chance to explore new possibilities and for many of us to begin again. Living at OHCC offers exactly that. It is the only month that clubs come together and present their activities, their social gathering, their humanitarian outreach and much more. It is the place to meet new friends, as well as reunite with the old. One of the excellent clubs to join is the Library Club. From the beginning, the Clubhouse design team and architects were aware of space's importance. It was no accident that the room was located on the left when you first entered the building. Through the large double doors, the quiet space with its fireplace and soft décor beckons to you. Did Benjamin Franklin envision this very important image in 1790 when he played a role in the development of the first lending library? Today, your library membership offers you free access to endless bestsellers, a variety of non-fiction choices, and books by some of our very own local authors and residents and much more. Recently, the "Afternoon with Authors Series" was formed that brought many of these authors to OHCC to present their creative endeavors. These presentations are free to club members. Your $15 a year membership for the entire family buys you a lot of special perks. Don't miss Do Dues Day on Jan. 10. Come and visit us in Abravanel Hall. My First Memory By Nikki Glovvanni is is my first memory: A big room with heavy wooden tables that sat on a creaky wood floor. A line of green shades, down the center. Heavy oak chairs that were too low to sit in and read. So, my first book was always big. e foyer up four steps, a semi-circle desk presided. To the le side the card catalogue On the right, newspapers draped over what looked like a quilt rack. Magazines face out from the wall. e welcoming smile of my librarian e anticipation in my heart. All those books –another – world just waiting. Many have enjoyed seeing Reese Witherspoon in movies. In her memorable portrayal of Cheryl Strayed in the movie, Wild, she sets out alone to hike the Pacific trail after the death of her beloved mother, and her failing marriage. Many will be surprised to know that Witherspoon is also an author. She does not disappoint in her newest novel, Gone Before Goodbye where she co-authors with Harlan Coben. Both these authors know what readers want, and they have combined forces to deliver. The main character, Maggie McCabe, a world-class reconstructive surgeon, finds herself entangled in a web of intrigue and lies. Don't miss this one if you like tension building suspense. 4.5 stars. "Libraries store the energy that fuels imagination.
