| OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2026 | 39 The game of bridge evolved from the 16th century English game of Whist. Contract bridge was codified in 1925 by Harold Vanderbilt with its roots in Constantinople before spreading to the West. Here at OHCC we are still holding lessons to learn and bring our game into the 21st century. We continue to have classes January - March on Wednesdays open to the OHCC community. Please contact the club email if you'd like to learn or modernize your game. Written by Janet Hund We look forward to seeing you on Jan. 10 at Do Dues Day. Or you can stop by the Clubhouse front desk, ask for a membership form and leave it with a $12 check per member. If you've never played, members will be court side to introduce the basics of bocce and give you a chance to play your first game as well as join our club. Looking for a great way to enjoy the sunshine, meet new friends, and share some laughter? Come join the Bocce Club! We gather every Wednesday at 2:30 pm for drop-in play, and everyone is welcome — whether you're a seasoned player or brand new to the game. Bocce is easy to learn, gentle on the body, and full of friendly competition. It's the perfect mix of fun, fitness, and fellowship! No experience? No problem! Our members are happy to teach newcomers the basics, and equipment is always available. Just show up, roll a few balls, and see why Bocce has become one of the most popular activities in our community. Come out, make some new friends, and see what all the buzz is about. The only thing missing is you! The first member event of 2026 is the Quarterly Meeting on January 30th from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. In addition to our usual meeting and lunch, we will be re-introducing the 2025 officers and handing out 2025 awards and announcing the Bocce King and Queen. Details will be emailed to all members in early January. Written by Jackie Crosby and Karla Sando, BocceClub. With the holidays winding down and the year coming to an end, we want to recognize the contribution that our volunteers have made this year. The club would not be nearly as fun without those who use their creativity and energy to plan and orchestrate our events. Just a few of the faces that have been ever-present in 2025 were: Christi Abshier, Janeen Sheelen, Julie Pashkowski, Sandra Math, Jacqueline Ettinger, Dawn Edwards, Cindy Smith, Tatis Cervantes, Linda Feinman, Rubina Martinez and Jan DeMont. Blessings one and all! Contributors in monitoring room reservations, setups and attendees for the club games have devoted their time throughout 2025. Drora Oren, Christ Abshier and Patti Lightholder thank you. Much fun resulted from your efforts. Non-MahJongg players were brought into our world with much success in 2025 due to the American MahJongg educators. Many afternoons were devoted to helping people learn the National MahJongg League Rules. The work in helping others muscle through the learning curve helped to grow club membership. Thanks to the teachers amongst our ranks. The public teachers and the home-school teachers are all necessary for the ongoing success of the club. Nearly every Saturday afternoon was devoted to teaching and/ or practice by Dawn Edwards, Patti Lightholder, Cindy Smith, Ruth Schafer, Kathy Palys, Mary Blackman, Phylis Lemberg, Mark Feinman, Drora Oren, Rona Cole and many more table coaches. The OHCC MahJongg Club thrives due to the efforts of ALL volunteers. Thanks for a successful year. Mahj On! Written by Dawn Edwards Mahjongg Club
