36 | OHCC LIVING | JANUARY 2026 | Want some fun while you exercise? If you are interested in improving strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, and overall body conditioning and having a good time while you are, then you check out an aerobics class to see if it fits your needs. As an instructor led class, led by Christine Alesiani, each class starts with a warm up session followed by an aerobic portion, and then a cool down (which includes some light stretching). The class is low impact; there is NO floor work. Occasionally, there are a few exercises for balance and an easy dance for fun. The last 10 minutes of class, we use light hand weights to maintain and increase strength. Classes are available on Mon., Wed., and Fri. in Abravanel Hall from 10 to 11 am. You can choose the number of classes each week that you would like to attend. The cost is $5 per class paid directly to Christine, our instructor. Prior to joining the Aerobics Club, you may participate in two classes without joining the club (at $5 per class which is paid to the instructor). The Aerobic Club annual dues are $10. If you would like to join, please make the check out to OH Aerobics. You can leave the check at the front desk. Note: There is no class available on the second Wednesday of each month when the Garden Club holds its meeting. Written by Kathy Palys Aerobics Start the new year with a different kind of exercise. Join our new Compound Exercise Class on Wednesdays at 8 am in the Mykonos Room. As we get older, it takes more effort to stay strong, steady, and independent. You may notice your grip isn't what it used to be, your posture feels slumped, or your balance isn't as steady. Traditional gym machines and simple arm or leg exercises can help, but they don't always prepare us for the real movements of everyday life. That's where Compound Exercise comes in. What is Compound Exercising? • Compound, or functional, exercises work several muscle groups at the same time — the way we naturally move in daily life. • Swimming laps is a great example: arms, legs, core, and back all working together. • In this class, we use hand weights while marching, squatting, or lunging so your legs, core, and balance are all engaged. • We stand for most of the exercises to work against gravity as this is more beneficial for balance, walking, bone strength and even your golf swing. These movements help with everyday tasks like: • Getting up and down from a chair • Reaching and lifting items • Opening jars • Picking things up safely from the floor Compound Exercise class is designed specifically for OHCC members and is safe and age-appropriate: We warm up, stretch, do our standing exercises and finish with a few mat exercises and stretching. The exercises are designed to work many different muscle groups that are not always challenged from weightlifting, gym machines, or daily activities. The focus is always on injury prevention, good form, and progress at your own pace. Join us every Wednesday, Mykonos Room, from 8 to 9 am. Bring a mat, hands weights and exercise bands. It is best to exercise in foot- grip socks or flexible shoes. Contact Mary Ann Hurley for more information at (240) 418-4659.
