She meets up with a friend of her father and together, obtain a foal named Secretariat out of one of her father's mares. Though the horse gets off to a rocky start, his career becomes a sensation when he is handled by a better rider. An abscess in the horse's mouth causes him to lose an important race. Eventually, Secretariat wins the Triple Crown.
