FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | FEBRUARY 2026 19
Just like gemstones, there are Birthday Birds of the Month. It
might come as a surprise to learn every month has not only a
representative jewel and flower but also a bird.
The January bird is the owl:
The owl represents individuals
who are thoughtful, observant,
and quiet, but speak with
profound meaning when
they do. If you venture
out on a trail here, you
might see our resident
wise, old Great Horned
Owl. They like to nap in
the trees here. I have
heard them singing
to each other under the stars here late at night with
the typical "hoo hoo."
The February bird is the parrot: It is a symbol
of a spirited, fun personality. It is unlikely
you will see one flying around here at Four
Seasons unless someone's pet snuck out a
door. I have seen them in trees in San Diego
on Shelter Island. It was fun to see these
colorful birds in the trees snuggling together
and hearing their noisy chatter. Spunky, smart, colorful, and
filled to the brim with personality. There are more than
350 types of parrots in the world — and plenty of them
live in the wild.
The March bird is the robin: A true sign of
spring is the appearance of robins here.
Look for a medium-sized songbird with
a red breast, gray upperparts, and a
yellow beak. Their sweet cheerily, cheer-
up, cheerio song rings out on spring
mornings. Robins are a promise of
new beginnings.
Start a new hobby by feeding
and observing the birds we have
in our own community. Birds
do love sunflower seeds and I
know squirrels do too. Squirrels
do not like the smell of coffee grounds so after your
morning coffee you can sprinkle some under your
feeder to keep them away. They also do not like
hot pepper. That can be mixed with the seed and
it doesn't bother the birds. Happy Birthday to
the owls and parrots and robins! ~ Gerrie
