A Century Long: Black History Month 2026
The Association for the Study of African American Life and
History (ASALH), started by Dr. Carter G. Woodson on Sept. 9,
1915, is the founder of Black History Month — an international
movement that remains a cornerstone of global culture. The ASALH
mission is to carry forward the work of Dr. Woodson, known as the
"Father of Black History."
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the first formal national
commemoration of Black History Month. The ASALH theme for
2026 is "A Century of Black History Commemorations." This theme
invites the world to ref lect on the power of remembrance and how
public observances have transformed the status of Black people in
the modern world. It honors the legacy of those who fought and
died to ensure that the contributions of people of African descent
would no longer be marginalized or forgotten.
Furthermore, the 2026 theme serves as a call to "Promote, Protect,
and Preserve." This commemoration acts as a defense against
historical erasure, asserting that understanding the modern world
requires grappling with the impact of Black history and life. The
celebration highlights that Black history is not a separate entity but
is deeply woven into the fabric of American and world history.
As we begin February 2026, the centennial serves as both a
ref lection on a century of progress and a recommitment to the truth.
Organizations across the country, from the National Museum of
African American History and Culture to local community groups,
will host events focused on this 100-year legacy of truth-telling in
an effort to educate future generations of the contributions and
relevance of Black people in the diaspora.
