| OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2026 | 43 Walkers and Hikers Did you make new year's resolutions for 2026? I can remember year after year, thoughtfully writing down my resolutions before I went out on New Year's Eve to celebrate. Always at the top of my list was a promise to increase my exercise routine in the coming year. I suspect many others have the same resolution. Now that we are at a certain stage in our lives, I am wondering if making New Year's Resolutions is even a thing. I hope so! I also hope that many of you have added joining the OHCC Walkers and Hikers club to the top of your list! Every January, when motivation is running high, we see gyms fill up, and enthusiastic individuals sign up for a variety of exercise classes. However, by February, many exercise resolutions fade. Let's not let that happen. Who doesn't want more energy, better sleep, less stress or the ability to keep up with the grandchildren? Now that we are older and wiser, we do not need to set unrealistic goals or fall into an all-or-nothing way of thinking. If you are not an active walker or hiker today, start slowly. Increase the length of the walk or your pace over time. It is so much more enjoyable when you have a friend or several friends to keep you going. Accountability really helps. We are more likely to stick with a program if we enjoy what we're doing. Walking or hiking with OHCC walkers/hikers is a very social experience. Besides getting fresh air, we share great conversations. Sign up for one of our walks and show up! Meet new neighbors or see friends you already know. You might enjoy the outing so much that you forget you are getting exercise. Sometimes our walks are not just about getting exercise. In mid-December, we walked around our community at night to view the holiday decorations at OHCC and to sing Christmas carols to appreciative residents. On Jan. 2, we walked around the San Diego Botanic Gardens and saw the spectacular Lightscape event, where plants and trees were illuminated in f luorescent colors. In February, we will be hiking at Los Penasquitos Canyon and also at Daley Ranch in Escondido. We have scheduled a walk on Mission Bay Trail and a nearby walk at Leo Carrillo Ranch. Lace up your walking shoes and join us soon! By the time this article comes out, we will have already had Do Dues Day. Perhaps many of you stopped by our table and saw the exciting walks and hikes that we have scheduled for 2026. If you missed us on Do Dues Day, you can always bring a check for $10 to the front desk at the clubhouse to become a member. We have a lot in store for you this year. Submitted by Marla Reiter
