Lighting Guidelines
You are allowed to
have motion detector
security lights, as long as
they do not create light
trespass and you use no
more than two bulbs,
each with a maximum
output of 600 lumens.
e lights should not
turn on from more than
ten feet away. (Design
Guidelines 5.10.7)
Unfortunately, this
is not always being
followed. Some residents
are using bulbs that are
far too bright. Many
motion sensor lights
actually let you adjust the
brightness, so this can be
xed. Another problem
is how easily these lights
are triggered. Too oen,
cars on the far side of the
street set o someone's
motion light — which
is denitely farther than
ten feet. Again, most
motion sensors can be
adjusted to x this.
ere are also issues
with the voltage and
placement of landscape
and path lights in front
yards. According to
Design Guideline 5.10.9,
you can have up to ten
lights, spaced at least
four feet apart. If you
follow this rule, you
do not need to submit
a Home Improvement
Application (HIA). But if
you have dierent plans,
you will need to ll out
an HIA, and the DRC
will review them.
