The Colony Cousins Genealogy Club welcomes you to our meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 1 pm in the Annex as we begin a three- month workshop on building your family tree. The workshop will be especially helpful for those who don't know how to get started. We ask everyone to bring their own device (laptop/tablet/phone) so that we can walk you through step by step to establish a tree on the free Family Search website, while we also explain its advantages and disadvantages. In March, we will show you how to move your tree to the Roots Magic application, including how to make a GEDCOM file of it. Roots Magic is a $40 application that can keep your tree private. In April, we will show you how to move your tree to an online family history resource such as Ancestry or MyHeritage, and we will describe the related pros and cons. Learning about your family's genealogy is one of the most popular hobbies in the world. The tools and resources to pursue research are immense. We've found that working in a group is quite helpful, as we can help one another with research tips and share experience. We will have a short social period at the beginning of our meeting and light refreshments. Our meeting will start promptly at 1 pm, so please plan to sign in at 12:45 pm. For questions, please contact Lennie Martin at 503-269-9987 or lenniem07@yahoo.com. | THE COLONY NEWS | FEBRUARY 2026 | 25 Genealogy By Greg Gries Please join us on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 10:30 am in the Meeting Room, when I will be hosting the discussion on A Mother Would Know by Amber Garza. "Do we really know our children?" I invite you readers to untangle the web of a family, maybe just like yours, or are they? This thriller will have you triple-guessing yourself. To read ahead, the book for March will be Eighteen Acres by Nicolle Wallace. Discussion will be led by Laura Anderson. Book Club By Patti Christiansen Hand and Footers By Marilyn Grimes, 619-606-6914 Happy Valentine's Day from Hand & Footers! Our roster continues to grow, as we added two new members in December. When taking photos is possible, we add those of new members or who missed previous photo shoots. We have a great group and have enjoyed getting to know each other. If we have an odd number who come to play, some of us will play singles while others play with a partner. Ideally, we like to play with partners at a table of four, so we encourage at least eight to 12 members to show up each time. We would love to have you join us. We meet every other Monday in the Clubhouse hallway by the Salon from noon to around 4 pm. We arrive about 11:45 am to get ready. Snacks are optional. Gals and guys are welcome, and we hope you'd like to join us. We have no sub list, so everyone who comes plays. A reminder is sent out the night before each game. Mark your calendars! February dates are the 2nd and 16th. If you need a refresher or want to learn the game, please contact club leader Judi Margolis at 949-584-0561. She will be happy to teach you at her home. 2026 is upon us. New Year's resolutions: change your strings; practice more; play more. There is nothing like a little peer pressure. Are you new to The Colony, and/or interested in making connections with other Colony guitar players? Join us on the 2nd and 4th Mondays at 1 pm in the Card Room. We don't offer lessons (see note below), so intermediate level and up players are requested. We have performed in The Colony as individual performers, duets, etc., and we do encourage members to perform, but it is optional. The HOA Board has recognized the Colony Guitar Society (CGS) as a resident club. Though we are not a band, connections were made through CGS founding members for the newest Colony band: The Infiniti Bros (Craig and Scott). Note: Though CGS doesn't offer lessons, I will be. See my ad elsewhere in this issue for details. Contact me at joerouxpmp@ gmail.com or 949-813-4526.
