It's February! Many of our New Year's resolutions may have already slipped by the wayside, and that's okay. For several years, my resolution has been the same – to treat myself with the same kindness and grace I endeavor to offer others. With that in mind, I share Joey Lauren Adams' quote: "May all your troubles last as long as your New Year's resolutions." February is home to numerous holidays and observances worldwide, ref lecting its rich cultural significance across societies. A few notable holidays – Let's start with Valentine's Day. Celebrated on Feb. 14, it is named after Saint Valentine, a Roman priest who performed secret marriages for soldiers forbidden to wed. Moving to another significant observance, in the United States, February is Black History Month, dedicated to recognizing the contributions of African Americans to the nation's history. Chinese New Year often falls in February, though the exact date varies each year based on the lunar calendar. This year, Feb. 17 marks the beginning of the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Horse. February is the last whole month of winter, but in-season veggies like asparagus, winter squash, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, collards, broccoli, and citrus fruits can brighten our meals. Enjoy spinach and leeks before the season ends. If you have a favorite recipe, share it with Francisco or the Bistro staff; your suggestion might inspire a new menu item. And, of course, from time to time, we must balance our healthy, fresh vegetable diets with a bit of sweetness. There's no better way to celebrate Valentine's Day, the February holiday dedicated to lovers of all ages, than with a fabulously decadent dessert. I personally embrace Charles Schulz's take about love and chocolate, "All you need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn't hurt." Congratulations to our recent "Sunday Brunch for Two" winners – Zoomie & Margaret Hoang (November) and Patricia Flohr (December). The coveted gift certificates are compliments of Francisco Aguirre, Four Seasons Bistro. Enjoy! Circle the date and get ready for an unforgettable evening! The Bistro's Valentine's Dinner returns by popular demand on Sat., Feb. 14 at 6 pm in the Ballroom. Savor your choice of Prime Rib for $28, Sweetheart Chicken or Salmon for $18 each. Reserve your seats now by calling (951) 325-2409 – pre-paid reservations only. Wishing you a February filled with warmth, new experiences, and moments to cherish. Bon appétit! Pita Reminder – The holiday season is behind us, and a new year brings more birthdays and celebrations. Residents may use the Ballroom to host events for non-resident friends and family.
