March Means Leprechauns are Nearby "March is a tomboy with tousled hair, a mischievous smile, mud on her shoes, and a laugh in her voice." ~ Hal Borland Last night I had a dream. I found myself in the hallway outside the OHCC Library and noticed the open entry doors welcoming me inside to the familiar but darkened space. I looked toward the fireplace and was greeted by dancing f lames and a warm glow nearby. There was soft music from someone humming a familiar tune. It sounded like, no, it was, "When Irish eyes are smiling." Moving forward, a small, bearded fellow wearing a top hat came into my view. It must be, no, it was, our very own Fergie, Fergus Oleary, the Leprechaun of the Ocean Hills Library. He smiled at me, holding a large green book on his lap, titled Leprechauns: e Myths, Legends and Lore, by Bob Curran. He motioned to me to pull up a chair and sit by the fireplace. I did so. We laughed about our past adventures and myths as we explored the origins, and superstitions of these wonderful creatures. Had it really been six years since I first found this jovial, little man hiding out among our bookshelves? Fergie had not failed us. Here he was, visiting us again as always during the month of March. I listened as he explained that Leprechauns are the heart of Irish culture and that they had captured our hearts. He asked me how much I truly knew about the Leprechaun. Were they fallen angels, a diminished god or the son of fairies? What did they do all day? What is the story behind the pot of gold? He then held up the book and said, "It's all in here." Suddenly, I awoke from my dream to the reality that Fergie was gone and I had important information to share with you this month. Do Dues Day went very well last month. We had lots of new members sign up. If you missed the event, remember it's never too late to join. Your $15 membership includes the entire household (all people living in the house, leprechauns included). Membership also includes free admission to all Afternoon with Authors Series presentations, which feature authors from our local area. They give live presentations of their current literary works, and many are residents of OHCC. The next Afternoon with Authors presentation will be on Sun., March 22. Bill Toone is returning to talk about his adventures in Madagascar, and he will also let us all understand his reasons for starting EcoLife Conservation. The series will continue on Sun., June 7 when Laurel Corona, a Canadian author from British Columbia, will discuss her newest book, Aloha Wanderwell Takes the Wheel, about the first woman to drive around the world in a Model T. You can also check her out at laurelcorona.com. Finally, on Sept. 20, T. Jefferson Parker will discuss his newest mystery, titled Wild Instinct. Mr. Parker is a very interesting speaker who makes his home in Fallbrook and has written 30 books. Remember, as Fergie says: "It's no use carrying an umbrella if your shoes leak."
