| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2026 | 39 We had a very successful Do Dues Day with over 70 members joining that day, 22 of them being new members. Our club is now enjoying a membership of 185 and growing almost every day. I want to thank board members, Janeen Sheelen, Tatis Cervantes-Aiken, and Elizabeth Westwater for manning the table with me. So many members stopped by to say hello, join, sign up for weekly drop in's, February Social and copy our calendar of events for 2026. Pop up events are being discussed as well. The January monthly lessons went very smoothly thanks to Dawn Edwards and her wonderful table coaches. On Feb. 7 Jacqueline Ettinger and Mary Blackman led a pop-up Mah Jongg 101 crash course to introduce the game to new members who wanted to get a jump start before the April teaching session begins. If you want to learn to play, go to the front desk and ask to be put on the waitlist for the April session or join the July classes. You don't have to be a member to learn, but members get preference for available spots. There is no charge for the lessons, but cards are required. The game is played using a Card developed by the National Maj Jongg league and it can be purchased in April thru our club. We are excited that our four drop-in weekly game sessions are seeing lots of members playing. Please remember to join in, we need you to join our club, dues remain at ten dollars. On Fri., Feb. 13 over 100 members gathered to celebrate their love of the game! Yummy treats were enjoyed and we toasted to the year of the Horse and lots of MahJongg play in OHCC. Did you discuss the question of the last month with your group? As a reminder that question was what if you pick up a tile but don't look at it can you change your mind and put in back and call for the prior tile? The answer is NO! Once you move the tile, it is yours to keep in your hand or discard. If you touch it but don't move it technically you can remove your hand and call prior as long as it doesn't move - better not to touch at all! Question for this month - When you roll the dice and break that wall when you are east- where are the tiles that you pull back supposed to go? Anywhere along your rack? On the right side? On the left side? Take a vote. Next month is our big celebration of the game we love. Please save the date for the OHCC Mah Jongg Clubs Party on April 30 which happens to be National Mah Jongg Day! We have lots of fun things planned for this lunch and stay and play event. Please look for the poster board which will have the details regarding cost, format, and fun facts about this party! Mahj On! Written by Jacqueline Ettinger Mahjongg Club Bingo The Bingo equipment committee made its report and recommendation for new equipment to the Board of Directors in February. We reviewed their recommendations and have made a decision. Although not top secret, we are not discussing our choice yet, because the details with the vendor has not been finalized. The delivery date is unknown as of this writing. The funds, although available, have not as yet, been transferred to the Social Club accounts. As you can tell we are still juggling several plates. What can I tell you – • It will be similar in size and shape as our current equipment. • It will have PC based software. • It will not have a numbered light board – those are mostly obsolete these days. • It will have a camera on the bingo ball as it pops up so you can see each number. • The runner will confirm a winning bingo from your card at your seat no need to run to the front. This is done by the numbers coded on your bingo card. • A large TV screen with show the pattern, jackpot value, numbers that have been called, current number called and more. This is all wonderful, but we still have to work out all the details with the vendor, still don't know when the delivery date is, we still need to be trained on the equipment, see if the vendor will take our old equipment or maybe find a home for the old equipment. We are still hopeful for delivery in April sometime. Maybe… Thank you to the Village Voice and The Ocean Hills Journalism Club without which none of this would be possible. Also thank you to all our monthly Bingo sponsors, your ongoing support is what helps make Bingo a monthly success. Written by Adele Siesel
