| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2026 | 29 To paraphrase Pat, our Garden of Eat- em guy, given this year's crazy weather, planting your vegetable garden with summer veggies might be a better choice than planting for a "spring garden." Now that it's April, we think he was right. Tomato plants fared much better than lettuces these last few weeks. Speaking of tomato plants, Pat had more than a few that he donated to our Sun Lakes Craft Fair fundraising efforts, which were quite successful. Pat's tomato plants, succulents planted in coffee mugs (courtesy of Jan Flammang), and other botanical delights were offered at very reasonable prices. Also last month, Linda Myers-Kalb demonstrated the art of Japanese Ikebona. She showed us step-by-step how to create a simple, elegant f lower arrangement. The meeting this month is Wed., April 11, from 10 am to 12 noon. As of this writing, the featured guest speaker is unconfirmed, but never fear, we will have a guest speaker to inform and entertain. Of course, along with his monthly veggie gardening tips, Pat will no doubt give us an update on the plans for the May 30 Garden Tour. April 30 is the deadline for submitting gardens for consideration. The garden must be in the Sun Lakes community, but the residents need not be Garden Club members. So, if you or someone you know has a yard or garden you admire, please contact Pat Pennington, (951) 314-9229. Or, you can pick up a f lier in any of the three clubhouses for more information. The owners of the 12 selected gardens will each receive a $25 gift certificate for Cherry Valley Nursery. Guests are always welcome to attend one of our meetings. President Barbara Maslowski at (951) 845-9741 welcomes your questions. If you have membership questions, please call one of our membership Co-Chairs: Sherry Case at (951) 533-3584 or Maureen Keeney at (840) 228-0862. Pat Pennington, at (951) 314-9229, loves to talk about vegetable gardening and is happy to answer vegetable gardening questions. If you have a fruit tree(s) in need of picking, contact Joy Bailey at (951) 845-5540. The produce will go to local charities. Lastly, our Sunshine person, Sandi Shelling-Fetterman, at (530) 575-2523, accepts texts with information about Garden Club members who might appreciate getting a get-well, thinking of you, or condolences greeting card from the Garden Club.
