12 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MAY 2026
DID YOU KNOW?
• May is known as the month of growth, with its name originating
from the Latin word Maius, which honors Maia, the Greek
goddess of growth.
• Some people wear a rose in their hair on May Day to celebrate
spring's arrival and to symbolize renewal, love, and protection
during the May Day Festival.
• You will see the annual ritual of the May Pole dance which
celebrates spring's arrival! People dance around the pole to
commemorate the change of the seasons.
• In the Northern Hemisphere, May marks the transition from
spring to summer, with longer days and blossoming gardens.
• The Kentucky Derby, known as "The Run for the Roses," is the
world's most famous horse race and takes place on the first
Saturday in May every year.
• Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican victory over the
French in 1862, and Americans celebrate it by spending over $600
million annually on beer — more than the Super Bowl or St.
Patrick's Day!
• May is the most popular month for gardeners to start planting,
as warmer weather encourages new beginnings in flower beds
and gardens. In certain regions, it is considered unlucky to plant
before the third weekend in May due to the risk of late spring
frost.
• May's official flower is the lily of the valley, which represents
sweetness and the return of happiness.
• Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May in many
countries, honoring mothers and caregivers with flowers, gifts,
and gratitude.
• May is also home to Memorial Day in the United States, observed
on the last Monday of the month, as a tribute to those who lost
their lives in military service.
Now, did you know all of that? Cheers to May!
