I thought that these were for emergency-responder use only because I had only seen them in an emergency kit. I recently went to a training where they were given away. We were instructed to use them in the kitchen on the stove. We can all probably remember the Old Western programs where a campre would be used for cooking. I remember seeing them are up and the camp cook would throw an old blanket over it to stop the ames. I read a 2013 article from a Dutch company saying that re blankets should not be used for grease res. Flash forward 13 years and the re blankets are said to be okay for grease res. I suppose that the improvement in re-retardant materials had something to do with this. e blanket is put to use with a three step process: 1. Pull the tab releasing the blanket. 2. Open the blanket and cover the re. 3. Keep the blanket covering the re for 30 minutes to be sure that the re is out. Fire blankets are used on stoves or small res. Fire extinguishers should be used on larger res. You may also need to extinguish any ames that escaped the reach of the re blanket. e re blanket is favored in commercial kitchens because it does not require any special clean up of chemicals like you have when you use an extinguisher. ~ Michael A.
