| OHCC LIVING | MAY 2026 | 43 Walkers and Hikers I'm over the hill…but at least the view is great. For those who like hills, we have some great conditioning hikes for you in San Diego County lined up this month. For those of you who do not like hills, we have plenty of scenic walks for you throughout our county and beyond. We have several walks and hikes in store for you during May. May 2 – HIKE: Cowles Mountain Trail, Santee. is is a three-mile hike, out and back with a 912 elevation gain. We consider the degree of diculty to be moderate to hard. Aer the tough climb, the hikers will enjoy lunch at Tierra Santa Mexican Restaurant in San Diego. Hikers will enjoy great views during the entire ascent, but the summit oers 360-degree panoramic views of downtown San Diego, Mexico, North County, and Orange County on a clear day. e trail can get steep and rocky towards the summit, but the views are well worth it! Don't want to tackle a dicult hike? You can meet the group for lunch if interested. May 8 – HIKE: Lake Poway Loop Trail, 2.8 miles. Despite the mileage being under three miles (which is the usual cuto for being considered a walk), this is considered a hike because it is up and down along the way, with a 460 Ft elevation gain. Aerwards, the hikers will have lunch at Elmisa Cafe Rancho Bernardo, 11611 Rancho Bernardo Rd. If hiking isn't for you, you are more than welcome to join the hikers for lunch. May 14 – WALK: Batiquitos Lagoon, Carlsbad, CA. is is a little bit longer than our usual walks, 3.4 miles, but it is an easy walk on so dirt, with no elevation gain. Aerwards, the walkers will have lunch at Tinleaf Fresh Kitchen in Carlsbad. As always, if you do not want to do the walk, you can meet the group for a relaxing lunch. May 25 – MEMORIAL DAY WALK: Buena Vista Park. Once again, we will head out to nearby Buena Vista Park for a holiday walk before we get together with friends and family. Please join us for this easy, 2.5 mile walk with great scenery, beautiful rock formations and woodsy smells. In March, we had a large group of OHCC residents attend a great walk at Leo Carrillo Park. Some walkers enjoyed a picnic lunch on the grounds before leaving the park. Some of us do not get enough hiking in our home territory. Sharon Sorenson, Secretary of the OHCC Walkers/Hikers club and her husband, Kevin traveled to New Zealand, where they said hiking is phenomenal. eir Siberian Experience included a breathtaking scenic ight over Mt. Aspiring National Park, where they viewed glaciers, river valleys and alpine lakes, ending with a grass landing in the remote Siberian Valley, before embarking on a three-hour bush walk through untouched beech forest. Would you like to lead a local walk or hike or just suggest a good walk or hike? We welcome both guest leaders and recommendations. We hope to see you on one of our many walks or hikes.
