36 | OHCC LIVING | MAY 2026 | Ken's love for Table Tennis began when he was in elementary school in Hong Kong back in 1965, playing with the then standard Chinese "penholder grip." As with several players in our club, Ken too went through a long break before returning to the sport. He played a little while in business school in Rhode Island but again, not till he arrived at OHCC in 2021. As Ken puts it "picking TT up again in OHCC was a true blessing, serving both as a passion and a way to stay active." A passion so much so that he soon gave up golf and pickleball to maximize play time for Table Tennis. Ken is an inspiration and poster child for staying active and not succumbing to the TMB (Too Many Birthdays) syndrome. Ken tolerated nerve pain from his chronic spinal stenosis for years, until it became unbearable. He nally bit the bullet and put himself through two open back surgeries in 2023, and in 2024. e rst one involving fusion of only the lower half the spine was not a success, but the second one involving fusing the entire spine from back of the neck to the tailbone using metal screws and rods, fortunately, was a success. Aer a year of healing and extensive physical therapy, Ken began his return to his favorite sport of table tennis in late 2025. Leg strength has recovered suciently, and despite the stiness in the back he has returned to hitting in classic form. Bending all the way down to pick up balls from the oor remains a challenge but he is managing that too well using the ball pick up extender on his grip that his friend devised for him. Do wish Ken well when you see him next and challenge yourself to try and return some of his killer serve and shots. e Table Tennis (aka Ping Pong) club at OHCC is open for play almost every day of the week. On weekdays the default location for play is Mykonos Room, and for weekends it is Abravanel Hall. Tables are typically set up for play on Mon. from 11 am to 2:30 pm, Tues. 6:30 to 8:30 am and all other days from 1 to 8 pm.
