What first attracted you to Sun Lakes? Was it the location? The ambiance? The individual homes? The security? Or was it the clean, communal look of the area? One outstanding feature of Sun Lakes is individually of the homes. This is achieved by the rules which everyone who purchases a home is supposed to read prior to moving in. There are several committees and individuals who can help you to know just how they relate to you as a resident of Sun Lakes. One of these committees is the Master Architectural Committee. When you wish to make an improvement to your home, an application must be submitted to the MAC for approval. In order to approve your request, we find the appropriate section of the rules on which to base our decision. Most of the rules that pertain to the MAC come from section 7. One of the most outstanding features of Sun Lakes is the different ideas homeowners display in designing their yards. Many have grass, trees, bushes, and f lowers which all take constant upkeep. Each yard must have a tree. Some have trees that were planted by the original owners. These now may be overgrown, or have put out roots that invade driveways, foundations, fences, and neighboring yards. When these trees are replaced, the new trees must be at least five feet tall and two inches in circumference. If the homeowner decides to convert the yard from real grass to synthetic grass, there are also guidelines for this. An application must be submitted to MAC with a drawing of the planned space for the grass, and the hardscape. This means a picture is needed, with all dimensions, lot lines, and set back. There should be 30 percent hardscape and 70 percent softscape. All trees and plants should be identified, along with placement of any walk or driveways. If you're using a contractor, his/her license number needs to be included. All synthetic grass must be put down so that there are no wrinkles, and it must completely cover the underlying dirt. Also it must carry a two-year or more guarantee from the contractor. 16 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2026 | Master Architectural In an age of smartphones, computers, and endless online information, it might be easy to overlook the value of a simple book. Yet the libraries in our community are some of our most treasured resources, offering more than just books. Our libraries provide easy access to reading without cost or complicated procedures. Whether you are looking for a mystery, historical fiction, a biography or a large-print edition, there's always the possibility of discovering your next favorite book. Unlike public libraries, where due dates and fines may be a concern, our Sun Lakes libraries operate on trust. Residents can borrow materials for as long as they need and return them when they are finished. Reading itself offers many benefits, especially as we age. Studies have shown that regular reading can improve memory, reduce stress, and provide a welcome escape from everyday worries. A good novel can transport us to another time and place; a biography can introduce us to interesting lives; a puzzle can challenge our minds. Our libraries also foster a sense of community. Every donated book represents a neighbor sharing something they enjoyed with someone else. Each book reflects the varied interests and experiences of the people who live here. In a sense, the libraries connect us to one another. Many residents appreciate the availability of large-print books and audiobooks, which allow people to continue enjoying stories and learning even when their vision changes make standard print more difficult to read. Our libraries help ensure that reading remains accessible to everyone. Libraries remind us that learning and discovery never have an age limit. Whether you're 60, 80 or 100, there is always something new to explore and something interesting to learn. The next time you pass one of our community's libraries, take a few minutes to browse the shelves. You may find a book that you have been meaning to read, or something new that looks interesting. Either way, you'll be enjoying one of the many small treasures that make our community a special place to live. ~ Laurel Stanley, lvstanley@gmail.com Library Advisory The Finance Advisory Committee (FAC) is asking for volunteers to join us in advising the Master Board regarding cash investments, review of financial statements, and funding of our reserves for HOA improvements and repairs.
