| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2026 | 11 What's happening? More than 2,500 signatures were submitted on each of three referendum petitions delivered to the Riverside County Registrar of Voters on May 26, 2026, under Banning police escort. As of the deadline for this edition, we are awaiting the results of signature verification. We remain confident that each petition contains the minimum 1,990 valid signatures required to trigger the city's obligation to either repeal the ordinances approving the Sunset Crossroads development, or place the issue before Banning voters in a citywide election, likely in November. To mark this milestone, Pass Alliance hosted the High Noon Rally on June 1 to thank the more than 70 volunteers from Sun Lakes and throughout Banning who collected signature after signature, day after day, guiding each signatory through the three separate petitions. The rally also addressed concerns about inaccurate and incomplete information being circulated regarding the project. Since late April, the developer has made phone calls, sent text messages, and filled mailboxes with promotional materials that we believe contain misleading claims and half-truths. The city has also released Transparency Reports that many residents feel raise more questions than they answer; public statements by elected officials have contributed to the ongoing confusion about the project. Examples include: • Promotional materials that omit mention of the warehouses, which constitute approximately 95 percent of the development. • Claims that the referendum would prevent Sam's Club from locating in Banning. • Claims that the Sun Lakes Boulevard Extension is part of the Sunset Crossroads project. • Claims that data centers are not a possible future use of the site. The Sunset Crossroads development is about more than warehouses. It's about local control, honesty, transparency, quality of life, and the right of residents to decide the future of their own community rather than having that future determined by outside interests. Our focus now is to provide voters with factual information and ensure they have an opportunity to make an informed decision if the issue appears on the November ballot. To support voter education, community outreach, and get-out-the-vote efforts, we have increased our fundraising goal to $85,000. Stay informed. Get involved. Donate. Shape the future of our community. Visit SGPassAlliance.org for updates, fact sheets addressing common misconceptions about the project, and to hear the Pass Alliance song that debuted at the High Noon Rally.
