| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2026 | 27 Here comes summer! And with it comes the Art League's annual vacation in June and July. There will be no formal meetings or classes, however we are planning a couple of member events. On June 26, we will be taking a drive yourself/carpool, docent-led trip to the Palm Springs Art Museum followed by lunch at Billy Reed's. Cost will be $20 per person and purchase your own lunch. Please contact Pattie Rogers at (818) 522-6927 for information. June 15 is the payment deadline. In July we will be hosting a long- time favorite, Carol Cole – abstract artist. She will be guiding a group project (one day only) that will be raffled off at ART WALK in September. As you have noticed I am not including artwork/artist information in this issue. In lieu, I'm offering a bit of food for thought: A new study in Nature Communications suggests that creative engagement may not only elevate mood or self-expression, but it may also actually slow the clock on brain aging. Creativity challenges the brain in ways that build capacity, connectivity, and resilience. It is vital work for the brain. And the effect is NOT tied to talent, but to engagement and is NOT something you have or don't have, it is something you build. So, choose one creative skill and practice it daily for 10 minutes. Protect your creative time like you protect sleep; it is essential cognitive training. Finally, make creativity SOCIAL. Joining a creative community (like Art League!) or taking a class amplifies both enjoyment and neural pathways. On that note, our meetings will resume Sun., Aug. 9 at 2 pm in the South Clubhouse. We will be featuring pastel artist, Steve McGill. His classes are Aug. 17, 24, 31 in the Main Clubhouse Arts & Crafts Room, 9 am to 12 pm. Shirley Anderson has all the information at (951) 434-7930. Come, check us out! MEMBERS PLEASE NOTE: We are in the process of confirming the Arts & Crafts Room availability on ALL Mondays from 9 am to 12 pm. We hope to be able to offer Art Mondays once a month where you will be able to socialize and do your own art thing. April's mini art show winners (below) were: Classic Art: 1st place, Dan Foster's Mountain Scene; 2nd place, Frank Bonarigo's Sailboats; and 3rd place, Judy Grant's Dog Gazing Out a Window on a Rainy Day. Miscellaneous Art: 1st place, Karen Hauschild's Sea Glass and Shell Scenes; 2nd place, Jim Cochran's photo of a Child with His Bicycle; and 3rd place, Nancy Troyer's close- up photo of a Snail. Thank you to all who showed your work. We bid a sad farewell to our friend and Art League member, Charles (Charlie) Burnett (at right). Rest in peace Charlie, we will miss you. We also send our condolences to Jim Cochran whose wife passed away in May. "Creativity is intelligence having fun." ~ Albert Einstein Art League
