50 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2026 | Fiy-Six Signers, Millions of Descendants As Americans celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, some family historians are asking an intriguing question: Could I be related to one of the 56 men who signed it? Many signers left descendants whose family lines continue today. Unlike the hidden patriots discussed in last month's column, the signers left extensive documentary trails. Their lives have been studied for generations, and many descendant lines have already been identified in published genealogies. The challenge is often not finding information about the signer himself, but tracing whether an existing descendant line connects to your own family. Fortunately, several excellent resources can help. One of the most important is The Leach Manuscript, available on microfilm through Family History Centers. Another is the seven-volume Genealogical Register of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence by Rev. Frederick Wallace Pyne, which organizes descendants by state with extensive genealogical detail. Researchers with New England ancestry should also explore the New England Historic Genealogical Society's holdings. This research highlights an enduring lesson in family history: famous ancestors don't eliminate the need for evidence. Published genealogies offer valuable clues, but every generation still requires verification through reliable documentation. Family tradition may point you in the right direction, but records remain the foundation of proof. Whether your research leads to a signer or another figure from the Revolutionary era, the goal is the same: to understand the people whose lives shaped your own family story. Those connections are still waiting to be found 250 years later. And while you're searching the past, it's worth making sure your own family's records are preserved for the researchers who come after you. Coming up! Our July meeting features a Family History Scanning Party — bring your old photographs and documents to be scanned and digitally preserved. Learn practical techniques for capturing and protecting your family history for future generations. The meeting is Sun., July 19 from 3 to 4:30 pm in the North Clubhouse. The club meets monthly to share research ideas, discuss tools, and explore new ways to document family history.
