Friends of Bocce
As we go to press, the hot dog days of summer
are upon us. We suggest that you bring water, hats,
umbrellas, and cooling towels to be prepared for
warmer temperatures. Teams are always looking for
subs during this session. If you are interested in subbing, call Tom
Whittington at (925) 826-7657. Subbing is a good way to get into
playing Bocce.
Dianne Stigall continues to offer Saturday morning play. These
classes will offer you a stress free environment to learn the rules of
Bocce or to improve your Bocce skills. Everyone is welcome but as a
courtesy, call Dianne at (951) 216-5219 if you plan to show up. Play
starts at 9:15 am.
A new rule regarding the initial throw of the palina (the little white
ball) is being implemented this session on a trial basis. The rule
states that when a player rolls the palina down the court it must come
to rest no less than 11 inches from the side rail. If the palina comes to
rest less than 11 inches from the side rail, the referee
will measure and move the palina out 11 inches
from the side rail. We will keep this rule in effect
for the rest of the 2026 season. Every member of
the club will have the opportunity to vote on this rule at the General
Membership Meeting/Italian Dinner to be held on Sat., Oct. 17. Mark
this date on your calendars!
I hope everyone understands that these Lifestyles articles are
written a month in advance. We encourage all members to keep up to
date with the Friends of Bocce news blasts (slfriendsofbocce@gmail.
com). Be sure the club has your current email. Tom Whittington
(925-826-7657) is the person to contact to update your information.
Fun Bocce Factoid: Roman generals actually had to ban soldiers
from playing bocce at times because were getting too distracted from
their military duties.
