56 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2026 A message from Ivy W. Harrell: As a two- year resident of Four Seasons and a proud member of the African American Cultural Club (AACC), I can truly say that I love it here. One of the highlights of my time has been connecting with the FS Travel Club and exploring new destinations. My first visit to Washington, D.C., stands out as especially meaningful; it was more than just a trip, it was a moment of profound connection. Walking through Capitol Hill, I paused before the statue of Mary McLeod Bethune and felt a deep sense of pride and ref lection. Dr. Bethune, the daughter of formerly enslaved parents, rose to become a pioneering educator, an advisor to presidents, and a fearless advocate for African Americans. She founded what is now Bethune-Cookman University and embodied the belief that education is the path to freedom and dignity. Seeing her honored in such a prominent place was powerful. It affirmed that our stories, contributions, and resilience matter. Standing there, I felt her legacy was not a distant history, but a living call to purpose. Another joy has been attending AACC's monthly meetings. I was especially moved by the club's motto, "GYE NYAME," an Adinkra symbol from Ghana's Akan people meaning "Except for God." Representing divine supremacy and protection, it serves as a timeless reminder that nothing happens without God's will and that we should fear nothing but Him. In February, we launched the year with a vibrant celebration of Black History Month. The room came alive with displays of inventions by Black innovators, followed by a screening of Sarah's Oil. This film tells the story of an 11-year-old girl in early 1900s Oklahoma who became one of America's first Black female millionaires after oil was discovered on her land. I have also enjoyed witnessing the changing of the Board and the fresh energy shaping our meetings. Since taking office, our new president, EJ Doucette, has introduced monthly themes that add both f lair and entertainment. Our recent gatherings in May and June, which honored mothers and fathers, were truly delightful. Come connect, celebrate, and grow with us! AACC meets on the first Monday of each month at 6 pm at The Courts. For more details, please contact Club President EJ Doucette at earl@ theinsuranceprofessor.net. ~ Ivy W.
